Pedro Martinez pitched a strong 7 innings while the Mets built a 4-0 lead over the injury plagued yankees. Sanchez came in on the top of the 8th to work a scoreless inning. Joanne and I were about to leave since I didn’t think the Mets would bring in Wagner with a 4-0 lead but I was wrong. The minute we got up, they played “The Sandman” so we went back to our seats to watch him blow away the Yankees with his 95+ MPH fastballs. Boy were we wrong. In a matter of minutes, everything unraveled and it was the bottom of the 9th with score tied 4-4. We all know the rest, the Yanks went on to win it 5-4.
It started out with Pedro pitching a great game. He ran into trouble a few times but he got crucial strikeouts when he needed them. He is amazing and I am glad we got to see him pitch in person. Mussina was OK. Nothing special. It was nice to watch Delgado hit a home run off of him. The Mets had the Yanks on the ropes the whole game until Wagner came in. I suspect that Willie Randolph wanted to get some work in for Wagner since he hasn’t pitched much in the past few weeks. They should have kept Sanchez in and brought Wagner in if Sanchez got in trouble.
I took a whole bunch of pictures using my Canon 20D with a 24-105 f4L lens. We were sitting on the upper deck so I could have used a longer lens but I don’t think they would have let me in with one. They did have a cool US army parachute exhabition before the game started. 4 men jumped from a helecopter and tried to land in center field. 3 out of the 4 made it into the stadium. Ironically, the one holding a Yankees flag did not land in the stadium but outside of it. It looked like he was going to crash into some of the lighting in left field but he did make it safely.
Overall it was a great day. The only thing to complain about is the Mets losing and costing Pedro another win. I hope Wagner does not become the new Braden Looper for the Mets this year.
